Thoughts of the Week: Michael Phelps and Olympic Mania, the Death fo Skip Caray, and the Loss of Trinton Sturdivant

Michael Phelps is a freak. I would venture to call him the most dominating athlete in the world right now (yes, including Tiger Woods. ESPN covered the fact that he doesn’t plan to pick up a golf club until next season – sometimes I really hate the Worldwide Leader.) Phelps is going for 8 gold medals (he’s already got 6) in these games and I find myself on edge every time he is in the pool. It has become so ridiculous that it is almost like watching a football power play a 1-AA school – you know how it is going to end but the chance for an App State – Michigan result makes it that much more exciting.

Oh, and by the way, kiss my ass France. If you’re going to talk trash you best be able to back it up.

If he hits one there we can dance in the streets. These words take me back to 1992 as I was sitting in my bed room watching the black and white television I stole from the kitchen. And even though Tim McCarver was calling the game on CBS that night, my memory has now faded and I only remember Skip’s call. Caray is as much a part of the Braves as Ted Turner, Hank Aaron, or Bobby Cox. People remember his father, Harry, as the voice of the Cubs but he was only with the Cubs for 16 years (he spent 25 years with their rival, the St. Louis Cardinals). Skip was the voice of the Braves for 32 years! From sarcastic quotes ("And, like lambs to the slaughter, the Braves take the field" – From the 1980’s when the Braves were horrible) to the unforgettable (“The 2-1. Swung, line drive left field! One run is in! Here comes Bream! Here's the throw to the plate! He is...safe! Braves win! Braves win! Braves win! Braves win!...Braves win!”), he left us with great memories we’ll never forget.

You will be missed.
Skip Caray (1939 – 2008)

The Blind Side. Is offensive tackle the most important position on the line, offense or defense? Many people would say yes, and I would most likely agree. Like many Georgia fans, I was shocked with the news that Trinton Sturdivant is out for the year with a knee injury. In a few short days, many have speculated how devastating the injury is to our MNC hopes. But rather than throw in the towel before a snap has been played, I find myself overly optimistic. We have 14 scholarship linemen on campus, I am excited to see who will become this year’s Sturdivant. And the beauty part is, we didn’t redshirt TS last year, meaning we don’t have to burn a year of eligibility.

Vince, Josh, Cordy…time for someone to step up.
